What couples say

From the firm's website.

“Patrick was extremely helpful and professional throughout our mediation process. He explained every detail thoroughly and guided us through the agreement. He is a kind man who truly tries to be as fair as possible to both parties while educating them on the entire process. We saved a large sum of money on legal fees by choosing mediation with Patrick.”

W.M. · Client testimonial, from the firm's website

“Attorney Morris took a great deal of time explaining the mediation process, answering all of our questions, drawing up the necessary paperwork ... and made himself readily available to us throughout the process.”

L.M.F. · Client testimonial, from the firm's website

“Patrick was a great resource for our uncontested divorce. He explained his role in the mediation process very clearly and described how the divorce process works in detail, all before requesting a fee. Once mediation started he was very helpful in explaining how the Court sees marriage and divorce.”

Choosing a mediator

What to expect from Patrick

Neutral from the first call

He does not take either side's story on the phone. You meet him together, so both of you know he favors no one.

The law in plain words

On each issue he tells you what Massachusetts law says and what the court usually looks at. Then the decision is yours, together.

Drafted and filed

He drafts the separation agreement and e-files it with the joint petition for your uncontested divorce.

The first meeting

What the first conversation looks like

You and your spouse come in together, or join by video. Patrick asks whether you are both here by choice, then explains what mediation is and what it is not.

He walks through what a divorce has to settle, the home, the children, support, retirement accounts, and answers every question. Nothing is decided yet.

You leave knowing the process, the flat fee and the next date, if you both want to go on.

His background

Why a mediator who was a divorce lawyer matters

Over 30 years of family law

Divorce, custody, support and property division, in court and at the settlement table, on Cape Cod and in Plymouth County.

Mediation only

He no longer takes divorce cases to court, and he will never represent one of you against the other. His one job is a fair agreement for both.

Standards of practice

He follows the Massachusetts Council on Family Mediation standards: neutral, voluntary, confidential, with full financial disclosure by both of you.

Four places to meet

Sandwich, Barnstable, Mashpee and Falmouth, or by video, around your work and the children's schedule.

Both of you

One mediator at the table, not two lawyers across it.

You decide, together, with the law explained. No judge decides for you, and no one bills you by the hour for the argument.

Questions

Common questions about a divorce mediator in Massachusetts

Is Patrick my lawyer or my spouse's?

Neither. As the mediator he is neutral and gives both of you the same legal information. He will never represent one of you against the other, during the mediation or after it.

Can I speak with him alone first?

No, and that protects you both. He meets the two of you together from the first conversation on, and any email between you and him is copied to your spouse.

What if my spouse and I are not on speaking terms?

Many couples who start mediation are not. The sessions are structured: Patrick leads the conversation issue by issue, and either of you can ask for a break. Mediation is voluntary, and the first meeting costs nothing.

Is the first meeting free?

Yes. The first meeting is free and confidential, with both of you, at the office in Sandwich or by video. Ask everything you want to know. Nothing starts until you both decide to go on. Call (508) 833-2622.

Barnstable County court

Cape Cod divorces are heard in Barnstable.

Mediation happens at Patrick's table, not in a courtroom. For a couple on Cape Cod, the separation agreement is e-filed with the Barnstable Probate and Family Court, 3195 Main Street, Barnstable, MA 02630, at the county courthouse complex on Route 6A, where the uncontested divorce is heard in one short hearing. Patrick Morris practiced in this court for over 30 years as a divorce attorney. He prepares the two of you for the hearing, and the judge reviews an agreement you wrote yourselves.
